Intervista a Chris Boutilier, un compositore talentuoso votato alla semplicità e l’onestà artistica

Benvenuto Chris e grazie per questa intervista.

1. Quando hai iniziato a comporre – e cosa o chi sono state le tue prime passioni e influenze?

Ho studiato musica classica sin dalla giovane età e ho iniziato a comporre all’età di 13 anni. Ho sempre avuto la capacità di manipolare i brani che conoscevo e ho imparato a farle mie fin dalla tenera età. In tutta onestà, questa abilità probabilmente è scaturita più per la necessitàdi coprire il poco studio che altro. Sono stato fortemente influenzato dalla musica pop fin da bambino, in particolare il lavoro di Peter Gabriel.

2. A livello personale quali consideri come momenti incisivi nel tuo lavoro e / o nella tua carriera?

Penso che il momento più importante nella carriera di ogni artista sia il momento in cui ci si sente a proprio agio nella propria pelle e nell’arte che si produce. Il processo musicale è diventato molto più gratificante una volta che ho realizzato e accettato i miei punti di forza e limiti come artista e sono rimasto soddisfatto del prodotto che ho creato. Il vero punto di svolta per me si è stato quando ho smesso di essere qualcosa che non ero e sono così riuscito ad andare avanti condividendo le mie verità musicali.

3. Puoi dirci qualcosa sulla tua ultima pubblicazione “More Thorn Than Rose”?

‘More Thorn Than Rose’ è il mio terzo album. Ha sicuramente un tono più lunatico e più dark rispetto al mio lavoro precedente, ma con momenti abbastanza leggeri da far divertire i miei fan tradizionali. Trovo che mi bastano alcune canzoni in qualsiasi album per iniziare a formulare una trama per il disco e sono davvero felice dei momenti che ho catturato in questo lavoro.

4. Quanto tempo ci è voluto per preparare l’album?

E’ stato un viaggio creativo vorticoso che ha richiesto circa nove mesi per finire il lavoro una volta completato il primo brano dell’album.

5. Cosa significano per te improvvisazione e composizione e quali sono, per te, i loro rispettivi meriti?

Per me tutta la mia musica nasce dall’improvvisazione. Il primo tema o idea nasce spesso da un momento di creatività molto estemporaneo. La vera forza di questa idea originale deve quindi essere esaminata e testata quando entra in gioco la struttura della composizione. Questo processo dal momento iniziale di ispirazione fino al completamento finale della composizione continua ad essere fluido, poiché credo che la chiave di volta sia bilanciare la gioia e la passione di catturare un momento creativo con la necessità di mantenere una canzone “in movimento”. Mi sforzo di trovare questo equilibrio e spero che l’ascoltatore apprezzi che il mio obiettivo è di creare un pezzo emotivo che si connetta con loro a un livello molto personale.

6. Il ruolo del compositore è sempre stato soggetto a cambiamenti. Qual è la tua opinione sui compiti (ad esempio politici / sociali / creativi) dei compositori di oggi e come cerchi di raggiungere questi obiettivi nel tuo lavoro?

Penso che l’obiettivo di ogni compositore sia diverso. Personalmente, cerco di catturare un momento nel tempo e spero che si connetta con l’ascoltatore. Voglio che la mia musica influenzi le persone a livello profondamente personale e, idealmente, dia loro un senso di pace e uno scopo che li possa aiutare a navigare nel mondo con un pò più di serenità.

7. Che attrezzatura usi per comporre la tua musica?

Lavoro molto semplicemente con la mia Yamaha P-255 e il portatile per registrare le creazioni iniziali prima di andare in studio per completare un pezzo.

8. Come pensi che le composizioni contemporanee possano attirare l’attenzione di un pubblico più ampio?

Penso che la chiave sia la semplicità e l’onestà. Un ascoltatore moderno spesso non è allenato nella metodologia classica di ascolto e in generale con la creazione di un brano, quindi sarebbe importante che noi compositori proponessimo musica aperta, onesta e sentita.

9. Potresti dirci qualcosa sui tuoi progetti futuri?

Sto solo concludendo le pre-registrazioni per un quarto album attualmente intitolato “Heart”.

Welcome Chris and thank you for this interview.

When did you start composing – and what or who were your early passions and influences?

I was classically trained from a young age and began to compose at the age of 13. I have always had a flair to manipluate the songs I learned and make them my own from a very early age. In all honesty, this skill was probably born more out of necessity to cover up not practising enough. I was heavily influenced by pop music as a child specifically the work of Peter Gabriel.

What do you personally consider to be incisive moments in your work and/or career?

I think the most important moment in any artists’ career is the moment they feel comfortable in their own skin and in the art they produce. The musical process has become much more rewarding once I realized and accepted my strengths and limitations as an artist and was still happy with the product I created. The real turning point was stopping trying to be something that I wasn’t and to just move forward sharing my musical truths.

Can you tell us something about your last release “More Thorn Than Rose”?

‘More Thorn Than Rose’ is my thrid full length album. It definitely has a bit more moodier and darker feel to the album than my previous work but with enough lighter moments for my traditional fans to enjoy. I find that it takes me a few songs into any album to start formulating a plot for the record and am really happy of the moments I have captured in this work.

How long did it take to prepare the album?

This was a whirlwind creative journey that took approximately nine months to finish once I completed the first track for the album.

What do improvisation and composition mean to you and what, to you, are their respective merits?

For me all my music is born out of improvisation. That first theme or hook often comes from a very impromtu moment of creativity. The true strength of that original idea then must be vetted and tested as the structure of the composition comes into play. This process from initial moment of inspiration to final completion of the composition continues to be fluid as I believe the key is balancing the joy and passion of capturing a creative moment against the need to keep a song moving and on track. I strive for that balance and I hope the listener appreciates that my goal is to create an emotive piece that connects with them on a very personal level.

The role of the composer has always been subject to change. What’s your view on the (e.g. political/social/creative) tasks of composers today and how do you try to meet these goals in your work?

I think the goal of each composer is different. Personally, I try to capture a moment in time and hope that it connects with the listener. I want my music to affect people on a deeply personal level and ideally give them a sense of peace and purpose that can then help them navigate the world with a little more serenity.

What equipment do you use to compose your music?

I work very simply with my Yamaha P-255 and laptop to capture the initial creations before hitting the studio to complete a piece.

How, do you feel, could contemporary compositions reach the attention of a wider audience?

I think the key is simplicity and honesty. A modern listener is often not trained in the classical methodology and creating a piece that connects with a listener intrisically is easiest done by composing a song that is open, honest and heart felt.

Could you tell us something about your future projects?

I am just wrapping up pre-recordings for a fourth full length album currently entitled ‘Heart’.
