“Studia” è il nuovo album del compositore Doug Thomas, ed è il secondo volume della serie di studi dedicati al pianoforte interpretati dal pianista italiano Angelo Villari. Il lavoro è disponibile su tutte le piattaforme di streaming digitale e sul sito Blue Spiral Records.

Studia è una raccolta di ventiquattro studi contemporanei per pianoforte, divisa in due volumi. Compositore autodidatta, sono anche parzialmente pianista autodidatta. Composti fra il 2015 e il 2017, questi studi sono stati scritti con l’obiettivo di migliorare le mie capacità pianistiche e compositive, imparando dai grandi. Ogni studio riflette aspetti dei compositori che mi hanno influenzato, da Bach a Richter. Ogni studio è anche abbinato a un altro sulla base delle variazioni. “Studia” è anche un progetto didattico, in cui condivido alcuni dei miei dispositivi musicali preferiti, come raggruppamenti di note dispari, poliritmi, spostamenti ritmici, scale pentatoniche, morphing o politonalità. Infine, “Studia” è una raccolta di pezzi per aiutare a costruire un repertorio da concerto o semplicemente per piacere. Tutti i brani sono stati eseguiti dal pianista italiano Angelo Villari.

L’artista
Da quando ha fondato la NOOX – ovvero North of Oxford St., un’etichetta discografica, casa di produzione e studio di registrazione – nel 2014, Doug ha pubblicato numerosi progetti solisti, tra cui Short Stories, Vol. 1 e 2, e il trittico Angles, Cassiopeia e Shapes. Per Ballades, ha collaborato con Piano & Coffee Co. e con i pianisti Marta Cascales Alimbau, Manos Milonakis, Marek Votruba e Muriël Bostdorp. The Seasons è un omaggio collaborativo alla musica di Ciajkovskij; comprende dodici pianisti di tutto il mondo – tra cui Simeon Walker, Garreth Broke e Dominique Charpentier – che reinterpretano la visione alternativa di Doug in ciascuno dei momenti dell’anno. Per Grace, ha collaborato con Sonder House e il pianista / violoncellista Jesse Brown. Il suo ultimo progetto, Portraits, è un altro omaggio alle sue ispirazioni – ed è stato pubblicato in collaborazione con Lonely Swallow e Affan. Studia è il primo volume di una raccolta di studi contemporanei per pianoforte – pubblicato con l’etichetta italiana Blue Spiral Records (BSR) eseguiti da Angelo Villari. La sua ultima uscita con la stessa etichetta, Anxiety / Serenity (con Mary Dunsford all’arpa), è una risposta alla situazione che il mondo ha vissuto in questo primo trimestre del 2020, attraverso la diffusione del COVID-19. Come scrittore, Doug pubblica articoli, interviste e recensioni ed è un collaboratore di Interlude come autore ospite di The Cross-Eyed Pianist e ArtMuseLondon. “La musica mi permette di esprimere idee e sentimenti in un modo unico. Ogni pezzo è un tentativo di trovare un equilibrio tra interesse e bellezza, entro i limiti del linguaggio e dell’esperienza. Mi piace l’idea che la musica possa fornirci un’alternativa alla nostra vita quotidiana, sia che la completi, sia che ci aiuti a prendere una certa distanza da essa.”

“Studia” is the new album by pianist and composer Doug Thomas, is the second volume of the twenty-four contemporary études for piano performed by italian pianist Angelo Villari. The work is available on all digital streaming platforms and on Blue Spiral Records website.
Album description
Studia is a collection of twenty-four contemporary études for piano, divided in two volumes. A self-taught composer, I am also partially a self-taught pianist. Composed between 2015 and 2017, these studies have been written with the objective of improving my compositional pianistic skills, by learning from the greats. Each study reflects aspects of the composers that influenced me, from Bach to Richter. Each study is also paired with another one on the basis of variations. Studia is a teaching project too, where I share some of my favourite musical devices—such as odd notes groupings, polyrhythms, rhythmic displacement, pentatonic scales, morphing or polytonality. Lastly, Studia is a collection of pieces to help build a repertoire for performance, or for pleasure. All the pieces have been performed by the Italian pianist Angelo Villari.

The Artist
Since founding NOOX — or North of Oxford St., a record label, production company and recording studio — in 2014, Doug has released numerous solo projects — including Short Stories, Vol. 1&2, and the triptych Angles, Cassiopeia and Shapes. For Ballades, he has collaborated with Piano & Coffee Co. as well as pianists Marta Cascales Alimbau, Manos Milonakis, Marek Votruba and Muriël Bostdorp. The Seasons is a collaborative homage to the music of Tchaikovsky; it features twelve pianists from around the world — including Simeon Walker, Garreth Broke and Dominique Charpentier. For Grace, he has collaborated with Sonder House and pianist/cellist Jesse Brown. Portraits, is another homage to his inspirations — and has been released in collaboration with Lonely Swallow and Affan. Studia is the first volume of a collection of contemporary piano études — released with the Italian label Blue Spiral Records (BSR) and featuring Angelo Villari. His latest release with the same label, Anxiety/Serenity (featuring the harp of Mary Dunsford), is a response to the situation that the world experienced in this first quarter of 2020, through the spread of the COVID-19. As a writer Doug publishes articles, interviews and reviews, and is a contributor for Interlude as well as a guest writer on The Cross-Eyed Pianist and ArtMuseLondon. “Music allows me to express ideas and feelings in a unique way. Each piece I compose is an attempt in finding balance between interest and beauty, within the limits of my own language and experience. I like the idea that music can provide us with an alternative to our daily life, whether it completes it or helps us take some distance from it.”
