Difficilmente è possibile catalogare uno stile specifico a Elisabeth. Crea ciò che trova bello, spesso una miscela di ispirazioni che attinge dagli anni ’70/’80, unita a suoni contemporanei. RINGRAZIAMO LA CANTAUTRICE ELISABETH GREY PER AVERCI CONCESSO QUEST’INTERVISTA

1) Puoi raccontarci un po’ di te?

Sono una cantautrice olandese che vuole realizzare musica rivolta a un pubblico eterogeneo e a tutte le generazioni. Fin dall’infanzia ho suonato in diverse band (come chitarrista e cantante). Dopo un periodo di lavoro/carriera ho ripreso la musica e ho trovato un ottimo studio/produttore. Insieme a questo produttore scrivo e compongo la mia musica.

2) C’è stato qualche episodio particolare che ti ha fatto sentire il bisogno di scrivere le tue canzoni? Qual è stato il tuo percorso formativo e che cosa ti ha influenzato di più?.

Dopo aver scritto alcune canzoni, ho scoperto che non erano abbastanza adatte per la radiodiffusione. Il mio desiderio era quello di essere ascoltata dalle stazioni radio, quindi ho dovuto lavorare sodo e con più impegno. I produttori di studio che ho trovato mi hanno ridotta all’osso (in senso figurato, ovviamente) e mi hanno rimessa in sesto e portata a un livello superiore. Le mie capacità sono migliorate nel tempo nel frattempo ho capito quanto sia difficile realizzare un buon disco. Dopo diversi anni ho avuto il coraggio e il sostegno necessario per scrivere di nuovo e realizzare brani migliori. Spero che tutto questo si possa sentire nelle mie nuove canzoni.

3) L’EP “I Am! Am I?” è uscito il 23 febbraio del 2023, puoi parlarci di questo lavoro?

L’EP contiene 5 brani. Ci sono stili differenti, però nella maggior parte dei casi ho cercato di unire due generazioni attraverso la musica. I testi sono legati ad un unico argomento, come la rottura di un rapporto e il modo in cui questo influisce sull’altra persona, quindi si tratta di un argomento senza limiti temporali.

4) Quanto tempo ha richiesto la realizzazione dell’EP?

Quasi un anno.

5) Attualmente, è difficile pubblicare: un disco, un EP, un singolo o un videoclip?

Sì, è molto difficile e costoso.

6) Come hai affrontando il precedente stato d’emergenza da virus SARS-CoV-2 e cosa provi per l’attuale abbattimento delle restrizioni?

Ho perso concerti e contatti nella scena musicale. Ora sono felice di poter ricominciare a lavorare come quando non esisteva il Covid.

7) Quanto di personale c’è nelle tue canzoni?

La maggior parte delle tracce è strettamente legata alla sfera personale.

8) Sei una cantautrice che scrive molti pezzi oppure hanno difficoltà a nascere?

In questo momento ho molte idee da proporre e sto lavorando ad un nuovo EP.

9) Da dove trai ispirazione? Hai qualche tipo di rituale prima di iniziare a lavorare?

La mia ispirazione nasce dalla musica che ascolto. Si sviluppa nella mia mente e la visualizzo come fosse un’immagine. In quel momento mi lascio guidare dall’ispirazione e riesco a comprendere come il brano dovrebbe suonare e di cosa dovrebbe parlare. Combino il tutto con le mie esperienze personali dando così vita ai miei testi.

10) Come reagisci quando hai un blocco creativo?

Sono molto entusiasta e a volte desidero che il brano sia pronto con troppa fretta. Poi però sono costretto ad avere pazienza e rispettare i criteri necessari per realizzare un brano musicale.

11) Cosa significano per te improvvisazione e composizione? E quali sono per te i loro rispettivi meriti?

Riuscire a creare qualcosa di nuovo dal vivo è la parte migliore. Non potrei farne a meno.

12) Che attrezzatura o software usi per comporre la tua musica?

Per fortuna ho a disposizione un ottimo studio di registrazione e un bravo produttore e ingegnere del suono.

13) Oggi forse più di ieri c’è una contaminazione dei generi. Pensi che la musica si sia aperta al mondo?

Sì, assolutamente. Ogni generazione ha bisogno del proprio stile musicale. La musica è rivolta a tutti e si adatta a diversi stati d’animo.

14) Come giudichi l’uso della tecnologia e dei social media al servizio della musica?

Ci sono due aspetti: Da un lato la tecnologia rende meno difficile e meno costosa la registrazione dei brani e inoltre oggi è più semplice accedere ad un pubblico diverso, questo grazie a internet, ai social media, ecc. Tuttavia, è anche vero che sarà più difficile farsi notare, poiché c’è una grande quantità e offerta musicale che viene pubblicata quotidianamente.

15) Cosa ne pensi della Loudness War e dell’intensivo utilizzo della compressione dinamica utilizzata nelle tracce audio contemporanee?

Non è nel mio stile, e non ho un’opinione precisa al riguardo.

16) Il ruolo dei cantautori e delle band è sempre stato soggetto a cambiamenti. Qual è la tua opinione sui compiti (ad esempio politici / sociali / creativi) degli artisti di oggi e come raggiungi questi obiettivi nel tuo lavoro?

Non sono una cantautrice impegnata sul piano politico, ma desidero che la gente ascoltando la mia musica si senta meglio, che abbia un sorriso sul viso, che abbia voglia di andare a ballare o che possa riconoscersi nei miei brani.

17) Che consigli daresti ai nuovi artisti che desidererebbero emergere?

Siate pazienti, continuate a realizzare brani musicali. Rimanete fedeli alla vostra idea e proponete la musica che vi piace e non quella che va “di moda” in quel momento.

18) Gli artisti spesso vivono immersi nelle emozioni del presente. Il futuro ti spaventa? Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?

Il futuro non mi spaventa. Voglio continuare a scrivere a suonare e ad esibirmi. La musica è la mia vita e voglio godermela il più a lungo possibile. Ispirare e dare gioia alle persone sono i miei progetti per il domani.

ELISABETH GREY Dutch songwriter and guitarist, formed her first band at the age of 13, inspired by various musicians and musical genres. It is difficult to categorise a specific style in Elisabeth. She creates what she finds beautiful, often a mixture of inspirations from the 70s and 80s, combined with contemporary sounds. Writing and composing music with the wisdom and lightness that only comes with time and decades of experience, Elisabeth aims to represent an entire generation that does not give up. In all her maturity, the artist still manages to express joy and wonder at life. The singer-songwriter has built her artistic career in a unique way, working with some of the best Dutch musicians, successfully bringing two generations together. 1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a Dutch singer/songwriter who wants to make music for all different kind of people and generations. From childhood on I played in different bands (as a guitar player and lead singer) . After a period of work/career I picked up the music again and found a very good studio/producer. Together with this producer I write and compose my own music.

2) Was there any particular episode that made you feel the need to write your own songs? What was your formative path and what influenced you the most?
After a few own written songs, I found out that it was not good enough for broadcasting . My wish was to be heard on radiostations, so I had to work harder and better. The studio producers I had found stripped me down to the ground ( figuraly of course) and build me up to a higher level. My skills were getting better and I know now how hard it is to make a good production.After several years I had the courage and support to write again and make better music. I hope it can be heard in my new songs.

3) The EP “I Am! Am I?” was released on 23 February 2023, can you tell us about this work?
The EP has 5 songs. There are different styles , but mostly I tried to bring 2 generations together in the music The lyrics are linked to one subject , as in breaking a releationship and how that affects the other person, and that is timeless.

4) How long did it take to make the EP?
Almost one year.

5) Is it currently difficult to release: an album, an EP, a single or a videoclip?
Yes, it’s very difficult and expensive.

6) How did you cope with the previous SARS-CoV-2 state of emergency and how do you feel about the current lifting of restrictions?
I lost gigs and I lost contact in the music scene.Now I am happy that we can do everything again as before Covid.

7) How personal is there in your songs?

Most of it is personal.

8) Are you a songwriter who writes a lot of songs or do they have a hard time coming to life?
At this moment I have many inspiration to write and I am working on e new EP right now.

9) Where do you draw inspiration from? Do you have any kind of ritual before you start working?
My inspiration comes from other music I hear. It crepes into me and I see it as an image. I get inspired and I know at that time how the song should be sounding and what it should be about. I combine this with my own experiences to write the lyrics.

10) How do you react when you have a creative block?

I get very exited and sometimes I want the song to be ready too soon. I have to be patient then and follow the rules of making music.

11) What do improvisation and composition mean to you? And what are their respective merits for you?
To create something is the best thing in live. I could not do without.

12) What equipment or software do you use to compose your music?
I am blessed to have access to a very good studio and a producer/engeneer.

13) Today, perhaps more than yesterday, there is a contamination of genres. Do you think music has opened up to the world?
Yes, absolutely. Every generation needs his own style of music. Music is for everybody and for different moods.

14) How do you judge the use of technology and social media in the service of music?
It has 2 sides: It makes it less difficult and less expensive to record music and the access to other parties is much easier now, because of the internet, social media etc. On the other side it is harder to get noticed, because there is a lot of music coming out per day.

15) What do you think about the Loudness War and the intensive use of dynamic compression used in contemporary audio tracks?

It is not my style, but I don’t have an expressed opinion about that.

16) The role of songwriters and bands has always been subject to change. What is your opinion on the tasks (e.g. political / social / creative) of today’s artists and how do you achieve these goals in your work?
I am not a political writer, but I want people, who listens to my music , to feel better, get a smile on their face, want to go dancing or can recognize themselves in the lyrics.

17) What advice would you give to new artists who would like to emerge?

Be patient, keep on making music. Stay with yourself and make music you like and not what is “hot” today.

18) Artists often live immersed in the emotions of the present. Does the future frighten you? What are your plans for the future?
I am not frightened for the future. I want to keep on writing and perform . Music is my life and I want to enjoy it as long as I can. To give inspiration and joy to other people are my plans for the future.
